The University of Tennessee System powers the state in a myriad of ways. In addition to the $4.8 billion economic impact the System has on Tennessee, research funding has reached $481 million. These funds help advance clean energy technologies at Chattanooga and support construction of a state-of-the-art engineering research facility in Knoxville. UT Makes Us Safer Through Discovery, Research and Outreach
All across the state of Tennessee we are making national security a priority. At the Institute of Nuclear Security, UT developed mobile radiation technology that helps guard against radioactive threats. You’ll find scientists researching biodefense and emerging infectious diseases at UT Health Science Center’s Regional Biocontainment Laboratory. Meanwhile, the UT Institute of Agriculture works to protect the nation’s food supply from terrorist threats and promotes safe food production. And the IPS Law Enforcement Center is responding to the urgent need for active shooter response training. Everywhere you look, UT enhances national security.

The University of Tennessee System continually finds partnerships that benefit the entire state. Tech 20/20 secures federal funding to promote the University and other regional technology-based companies. The Office of Corporate and Foundation Engagement identifies mutually-beneficial partnerships with businesses throughout the state. UT and IBM have announced a new computational lab and education initiative devoted to analytics that will enable the university to store large amounts of data while providing students and researchers the processing systems necessary to support it. And the Cherokee Farm Innovation Campus is developing research and technology park envisioned as a hub of public-private partnerships where scientific discovery can address real-world business and industry questions. The UT Research Foundation is among the world’s top university producers of patents. We invented the test used by government meat inspectors to prove what you buy at the grocery is healthy and safe. A UT alum changed game night forever through the co-invention of Trivial Pursuit. Mark Dean holds three of the original nine patents on the standard IBM personal desktop computer. And we would be lost (quite literally) without Min Kao, the co-founder of Garmin. UT’s discoveries address real-world and industry questions big and small. Doing Everything We Can to Make Opioid Abuse a Part of the Past
Through educational programs, scientific research, and community outreach, UT supports statewide healthiness. We’re conducting groundbreaking research to better understand opioid addiction and prevent relapses. We’ve created evidence-based substance abuse treatment, and the curriculum to teach millions how to use it. And we’ve developed a digital tool that helps identify drug-seeking patients with a history of abuse. UT Extension has partnered with the National Council on Patient Information and Education to address medication literacy in Tennessee. Everywhere you look, UT is improving the state’s health.
